Two Skegness Coasters took part in the annual Retford Half Marathon on Sunday 12th March. Martin Jessop and Sue Smith both enjoyed the race; Martin stated that it was a “murky morning but weather good for running in.” Martin placed 391st and Sue Smith placed 546th in a field of 1200 runners, with times of 1:49:23 and 1:55:45 respectively.
On the following Sunday (19th) a Coasters ‘clan’ travelled north of the county to participate in the Gainsborough and Morton 10K; a flat, rural road race that started in Morton and took in the beautiful villages of East Stockwith and Walkerith. The route was very scenic and was lined with brilliantly supportive, motivating marshals which added to the overall community atmosphere.
Robert Rennie led the Coasters in a brilliant 41 minutes and 41 seconds. There were lots of personal bests (PBs) gained at the event, including Sue Smith who celebrated a PB on her birthday. Other great PBs included Carole Tumber, Helen Kennedy, Mark Battersby, Tracy Sands and Rebecca Porter, and a course PB (CPB) for Phae Bryant. Coaster Mark Battersby who was taking part in his first running event commented “I loved it…when I got the text through with my time it made all the training worthwhile. It felt great having all of the marshals and residents cheering us on at the sides of the roads.”
Times: Robert Rennie 41:41, David Young 49:08, Rochelle Hawksley 49:45, Sue Smith 51:56 PB, Janet Harmston 52:06, Paul Whitfield 54:27, Phae Bryant 55:25 CPB, Andy Wilkinson 55:45, Julie Hawkesford 56:54, David Freeman 58:36, Carole Tumber 59:30 PB, Debbie Galloway Cussons 59:49, Michael Hawkesford 1:00:40, Helen Kennedy 1:00:58 PB, Ian Bailey 1:01:24, Jackie Rhodes 1:02:17, Mark Battersby 1:02:31 PB, Elly Rutherford 1:08:51, Sally Higgins 1:08:56, Tracy Sands 1:16:25 PB, Rebecca Porter 1:16:25 PB, Claire Parker 1:25:29.
On the same day, Ben Evison and Martin Jessop competed in the East Hull 20, a flat course on rural roads and partly run on the railway line located in the Holderness area. Despite the wind and the rain both runners gained impressive times of 2:11:21 and 2:58:01 respectively. Martin Jessop stated “it was a great event to take part in in the lead up to the London Marathon….we were rewarded with a good buffet spread after too.”
